What We Know About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many remain under care, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
