We are checking images and video posted this morning that show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures were from relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
