The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

When an teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a crucial European match against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

During his first start in the tournament - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to confirm a quarter-final place.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by 10 days.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Real from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I have just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Given a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his age and experience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can observe what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He's extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"He will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through local academies before joining the club's famous youth academy.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under international regulations, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a competitive full international.

He has played for Spain at youth level, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with Spain, but I'll make a conclusion soon."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the club chase future success.

Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to earn my minutes on the field," he commented after the win at Manchester.
