The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress constructed from the recollections of Vecna. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—a discovery that could contain the secret to his downfall permanently.
Editor's Note: This discussion reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.
The Discovery in the Tunnel
After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies not within the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.
In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the full story behind the events in the tunnel is detailed in the theatrical production the prequel play.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
*The First Shadow* opens with the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.
This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. The man in the cavern is that employee.
So, What's in the Case?
Given what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have samples of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would genetically impart to the children Brenner would experiment on.
Alternatively, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he struggles with the control of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will Byers was controlled by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his personal demons to gain strength.
This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the endgame conflict to come.
