National Guardsman Recovering Following Sustaining Gunshot Wounds in the Nation's Capital
A member of the National Guard is on the mend after he was critically injured in an ambush-style shooting last month in the US capital.
The family of the 24-year-old soldier, twenty-four, report "his head wound is slowly healing and that he's beginning to 'look more like himself,'" stated the state's chief executive the governor.
The soldier's relatives expects the Air Force staff sergeant to be in intensive treatment for the coming fortnight, and they feel hopeful about his progress, said the governor.
The serviceman was one of a pair of West Virginia National Guard members injured by gunfire when a shooter opened fire in proximity to the presidential residence on 26 November. His fellow guardsmember, twenty-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, died from her injuries.
"Our request remains for all West Virginians and the nation's citizens for their thoughts and prayers!" the governor said.
Morrisey attended a vigil on last Friday night for the injured soldier at Musselman High School in his hometown, where the serviceman was once a student.
A pastor at the vigil shared a statement from the guardsman's mother and father, his family.
"We know that there is a difficult journey to go," they wrote, according to local news outlet outlets.
"But our faith keeps us optimistic. We remain grateful for the prayers and the support from people all over the globe."
Earlier in the week, the governor said Staff Sgt Wolfe had acknowledged medical staff with a positive gesture and was able to move his toes.
Law enforcement have formally accused the suspected shooter, an Afghan national named the suspect, with first-degree murder and attempted murder.
Before coming to the US in 2021, he was once a member of a special forces unit in a CIA-backed unit that operated alongside US forces in the South Asian nation.
The injured airman was one of 2,000 militia personnel whom President Donald Trump dispatched to the nation's capitol in last summer as part of his immigration and crime-related crackdown in urban centers.
In the aftermath of the incident, Trump said he desired an additional five hundred National Guard troops deployed to the nation's capital.
The Trump administration has also cited the attack as a justification for further immigration crackdown measures.
They have halted naturalization proceedings for immigrants from 19 countries that were part of a entry restriction implemented over the recent season, among them Afghanistan.
