Milei Statuette, Anyone? Italy's PM to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity
Passing on undesired offerings might be considered a little discourteous – except if it's done for a noble purpose.
A Charitable Clear-Out
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by foreign dignitaries during her travels. The eclectic collection could include gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, together, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off in a public auction by a Rome-based art dealer. An exact timeline remains to be announced, but the intention is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the revenue going to non-profit organizations.
Palazzo Chigi Holdings
The items reportedly kept in a secure area on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. Sources state that Meloni furthermore planning to auction off gifts received by her political forerunners that have been gathering dust for years.
A complete inventory is yet to be made public, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The discussion centered on whether a legal value limit was being respected. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents worth more than €300.
A Global Assortment of Presents
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
- A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
- Artworks from Moldova.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and several rugs received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, mainly from within her party, with building relationships with foreign leaders and positioning Italy as a significant player on the world stage once again.
The forthcoming sale symbolizes a novel approach to deal with the protocol gifts that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
