Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
