In a notable move for their rebuilding roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a lucrative contract for the accomplished player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The contract features a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with annual pay of $16 million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the following year.

Notably, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on performance achievements in 2026:

• An additional $1M for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
• $500,000 for placing second or third in MVP voting.
• A quarter-million for placing between fourth and tenth.
• An identical bonus for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

His deal includes that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his consent and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the deal. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and flight reimbursement between Japan and the U.S..

Posting Fee and Historical Context

As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's Central League. The Swallows would also receive a 15% cut of 15% triggered performance bonuses.

Murakami will become the fourth player from Japan to play for the South Siders, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.

On-Field Accomplishments

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 soon, enters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a 60-102 season, finishing at the bottom in the American League Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.

The winner of back-to-back Most Valuable Player honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami made history with a historic 2022 season where he belted 56 home runs, eclipsing the single-season record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Despite recording often, he batted .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his eight-year tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing mainly at first, he has more recently played to the hot corner.

International Pedigree

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off double that scored Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a come-from-behind 6-5 victory. The very next day in the championship game against the Team USA, he slugged a tying homer in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's eventual title triumph.

The new White Sox addition is slated to be unveiled at a media availability on Monday.
