Anthony Barry Explains The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, Anthony Barry competed in League Two. Currently, he's dedicated on helping Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory next summer. His journey from player to coach began as an unpaid coach coaching youngsters. He recalls, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his destiny.

Metoric Climb

Barry's progression is incredible. Starting with his first major job, he built a reputation with creative training and excellent people skills. His club career took him to top European clubs, while also serving in coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a methodical process that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, particularly on fine points, defines Barry’s story. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their methods involve player analysis, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the England collective and rejects terms like “international break”.

“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

Barry describes himself and the head coach as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” he declares. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and we dedicate many of our days on. It’s our job not just to keep up of the trends but to surpass them and set new standards. This is continuous to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We have 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We must implement a sophisticated style for a tactical edge and we must clarify it in that period. It's about moving it from thought to data to know-how to performance.

“To develop a process that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had from when we started. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections among them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, observing them live, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

Barry is preparing on the last two of World Cup qualifiers – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. The team has secured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach should represent the best aspects from the top division,” Barry says. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit should be harder than ever to get yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them an approach that enables them to move and run as they do in club games, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – playing out from the back, pressing from the front. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They know how to set up – defensive shapes. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”

Passion for Progress

Barry’s hunger to get better knows no bounds. While training for the top coaching badge, he had concerns about the presentation, especially as his class contained luminaries such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he went into tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. Such as Walton jail in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.

He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined numerous set-plays – was published. Frank was one of those impressed and he brought Barry to his team at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches but not Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge took over, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he recruited Barry away from London to work together again. English football's governing body view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
