Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family navigate their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
