A high-ranking Russian general has been killed following an explosion in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The event happened on Monday morning when an IED concealed beneath a vehicle detonated, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Investigators indicated that one possible explanation involves the alleged involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has remained silent.

Location of the Incident

Personnel have been dispatched to the location, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the city.

Media coverage indicate the detonation occurred in a parking area adjacent to a residential building.

Pattern of Targeted Attacks

Since the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military officials have been attacked within Moscow.

This new event echoes other notable incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a automobile blast in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a bomb concealed on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a source from Ukraine previously linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of policy.

The conflict has increasingly seen clandestine operations moving into the center of the Russian capital.

The probe into General Sarvarov's death is still active.
